The Fox Broadcasting Company was created on October 9, 1986 by the News Corporation, with its name taken from the namesake Twentieth Century Fox film and television studio that they also owned at that time. The network held its "grand opening" on April 5, 1987 with the introduction of primetime programming and for over 31 years, it has turned from a small fledging network into the fourth major television network on broadcast television. After a big ownership change in 2013 with the creation of 21st Century Fox, the network would receive another major ownership change three years later, when The Walt Disney Company announced that it would acquire most of 21CF's assets including their entertainment assets (such as the Fox studio), pay-TV networks, the Star India network group, their stakes in Hulu, National Geographic Partners & Endemol Shine Group (later spun-off to Banijay) and its regional sports networks (which were later spun-off to the Diamond Sports Group and renamed in order for the merger to get DOJ approval). Due to Disney's ownership of ABC, which meant that ownership of two major networks (ABC and Fox) is considered illegal by FCC regulations as well as their ownership of ESPN, the Fox network, as well as certain assets such as the Fox Sports channels, their news channels among other assets would be spun-off into a separate company using the Fox name. The entity, titled Fox Corporation began trading on March 19, 2019 and has owned the network and the rights to the Fox brand since then.
