1st Logo (1981-1988)
Nickname: "Red Star Writer"
Logo: On a shady (mostly black) olive green background, we see a red star forming the neon text "THE MOVIE STORE" with "THE" smaller than the other words. Then a red outlined rounded rectangle is drawn around it from the legs of the "M" and "R." The logo then flashes a bit.
Variants:
- On some films, such as Free Ride and Meatballs III: Summer Job, the logo appears on a more bluish background.
- On the trailer for Into the Fire, it skips the forming of the logo.
FX/SFX: The logo drawing and flashing.
Music/Sounds: A synth chord with clicks, scritch-scratching noises, and a trumpet portion.
Availability: Extremely rare.
- Check old VHS releases of films for this logo as some of their films were released under the Vestron, Lightning, IVE and Cineplex Odeon Home Video labels, among others.
- One of the most successful films to have this logo was Jackals (1986) (a.k.a. American Justice). Other movies that have this logo are Happy Hour (a.k.a. Sour Grapes) (Though it's missing from the Canadian Cineplex Odeon VHS, oddly), The Outing (a.k.a. The Lamp) (North American VHS only.
- Don't expect it on the Blu-Ray, which uses the film's international cut, and it is unknown if the DVD version retains this logo. Additional foreign prints used the Skouras Pictures logo instead), Crystalstone (only seen on VHS), Free Ride (but not on IVE's VHS and Betamax release, which instead starts with a presentation credit for Moustapha Akkad), Meatballs III: Summer Job, After School (despite the fact that the Academy Entertainment VHS release features the next logo on the packaging), and The Offspring (a.k.a. From a Whisper to a Scream) (VHS only).
- On newer prints of some of these films, it has been plastered by the MGM logo due to many of those films being part of the Manson International library, which MGM owns through Orion.
- It can be seen on the Scorpion Releasing Blu-Ray of Too Scared to Scream.
- It is unknown if this logo was seen on theatrical prints of Into the Fire or Appointment with Fear (The IVE VHS uses the Manson International logo instead, while the Vestron Video VHS of the former film omits this logo entirely).
2nd Logo (1989-1993)
Nickname: "The Lines and The V"
Logo: On a black background, 8 lines in the shape of triangles slide in, with the colors being purple, pink, and orange-red seguing into each other, and zoom out to reveal a box shape. The colored lines fade out and shiny navy blue or silver lines fade into the negative spaces as the shiny text "MOVIESTORE" in the Elephant font and also in either silver or navy blue is revealed. A triangle, in either of the aforementioned colors, comes down onto the box and shines the lines of the previous box as a purple streak wipes in "E N T E R T A I N M E N T" in the same colors as mentioned before. The triangle happens to become segmented and dual-toned.
FX/SFX: Lines forming, zooming out, streak-shooting.
Music/Sounds: Either new age music or a more triumphant-sounding fanfare. Sometimes, it is silent, or has background noise/music playing over it.
Availability: Rare. Appears on Ski School (Including the Olive Films DVD), Dream Rider (The British First Independent Video release), Beyond the Stars, Blood Nasty (Cineplex Odeon VHS), Love Bites, Meet the Hollowheads, Conflict of Interest, Nobody's Perfect (Not the DVD), and Meatballs 4. It may have been seen on theatrical prints of Another Chance, but the Republic Pictures VHS doesn't use a logo. The triangles in the logo was later used for the Moviestars logo in the 1990's.
