Background

Treyarch is an American video game developer founded in 1996 by Peter Akemann and Doğan Köslü. On October 3, 2001, it was acquired by Activision. Treyarch is nowadays mostly known for the Call of Duty series (along with Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games) and was previously known for Spider-Man titles and their work on the Tony Hawk's series. Its first game was Die by the Sword for PC.

1st Logo (February 28, 1998-April 2000)

Visuals: On a black background, there is a blue left-handed trefoil knot, which is in a 3D style and almost resembles a triquetra symbol. Under it is the word "TREYARCH" in gold-orange with the "T" bigger than the rest of the letters.

Variant: On the demo of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, "TREYARCH" is in the Fontocide font in front of the glowing trefoil knot. There are a few bubbles around the logo, which also has a Matrix-style effect.

Technique: A still, digital graphic.

Audio: None or the opening theme of the game.

Availability: Seen on Die by the Sword and its expansion, Limb from Limb for PC. The variant is seen on the demo version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (which is found on the July/August 2000 issue of Official Dreamcast Magazine demo disc) for Dreamcast.

2nd Logo (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1/2 variant) (May 22-December 15, 2000)

Visuals: There is the Treyarch trefoil knot from before in grafiiti style with an orange-gold gradient outline, tilted facing northeast. On it is "Treyarch" in a graffiti styled font with a green outline. Under "Treyarch" is the website URL "www.treyarch.com". The logo flashes orange and green colors, then parts of the colors appear side-by-side. It flashes again, then the colors disappear in a snake transition.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A hip-hop tune with a man saying "Get Down" at the beginning.

Availability: Appears on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for Dreamcast. Also appears on the demo of the latter (found on the December 2000 issue of Official Dreamcast Magazine demo disc).

3rd Logo (June 22, 2000-November 15, 2001)

Visuals: There is the same Treyarch trefoil knot from the 1st logo, but the back 3D parts are not there and there is a blue shiny glow on the right part of it. The word "TREYARCH", which is in a different font this time, is in black, has a white outline and has a blue glow around it.

Trivia: The glowless print version of this logo was still used on cover art of Treyarch's games (some later games used a variant of the 3rd official logo on-screen) until 2006.

Variant: On Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X, black and white smudge-styled parts of the trefoil knot come in side-by-side and attach themselves, forming the logo. A few seconds later, it shatters down to reveal a blue 3D version of the logo. Then, "TREYARCH" pans down turning as the knot zooms in rotating.

Technique: A still, digital graphic.

Audio: A virtual-like sound or silence.

Audio Variant: The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x variant has a mix of rustle and radio noise, followed by loud shattering as the logo is revealed, and ends with a wind blowing sound.

Availability: Seen on Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm (known as Dragon's Blood in the UK) and Max Steel: Convert Missions for Dreamcast, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x for Xbox.

4th Logo (April 19, 2001-July 9, 2004)

Visuals: There is a new design of the Treyarch trefoil knot, which is now colored silver, doesn't have the cut-outs and has a few white shines around it. Under it is "TREYARCH" in a new font, which later resembles a Spider-Man movie-like font and has an emboss effect. The logo shines with a bright light once.

Variants:

  • On Spider-Man: The Movie and Spider-Man 2, the trefoil knot zooms out quickly into a red spiderweb, sticks itself into it and shakes a little, then the spiderweb fades out. As the knot dissolves in a blur transition, "TREYARCH" appears flipping in side-by-side. Then a blue light travels through the logo.
  • On Minority Report: Everybody Runs, a light splash draws the trefoil knot in, then the letters rotate and become visible one-by-one, forming the word "TREYARCH". The logo flashes and then proceeds to the opening movie.

Technique: CGI by Blur Studio.

Audio: A heavy-sounding synthesized drone and computer beeps with a shining sound.

Audio Variants:

  • On the Spider-Man games, a styled virtual-like sound with the sound of webbing and a shiny flipping sound is used.
  • On Minority Report: Everybody Runs, a quiet sound is heard when the trefoil knot is drawn in.

Availability: Seen on Spider-Man (2000) for Dreamcast, PC and Mac (although the game's copyright screen has the text from the 1st logo), and Spider-Man: The Movie, Spider-Man 2, and Minority Report: Everybody Runs for GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.

5th Logo (NHL 2K2 variant) (February 14-July 11, 2002)

Visuals: There is a steel blue ring on an icy ground. Then it shakes and flips up, as the sides of it become the Treyarch trefoil knot from the 3rd logo. When that happens, it shines. As the Treyarch knot zooms back, the icy ground disappears and "TREYARCH" appears zooming out and stops under the logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A heavy-sounding synthesized drone with sounds of the circle turning into the trefoil knot and shining.

Availability: Seen on NHL 2K2 for Dreamcast.

6th Logo (Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer variant) (September 16, 2002-October 15, 2003)

Visuals: The Treyarch logo (in the same look as the 4th logo, but the text is shifted up closer) appears in the water with some ripple effects. As the logo stops rippling and settles into its position, the water background fades into a spotlight-like background with the logo's shadow behind it. The logo shines and then the background with its shadow fades into white. Then the logo fades out into white a brief second later.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: Water sounds.

Availability: Appears on Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer for GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.

7th Logo (NHL 2K3 variant) (November 10, 2002-March 28, 2003)

Visuals: There is the top view of an icy floor, which has the Treyarch logo (this time, the Treyarch knot is blue and has white and blue outlines around it, and the word "TREYARCH" is seen under it in an Art Deco-like font, which also has the white and blue outlines around it as well) covered with ice. Then the Zamboni (with the SuperCool design) appears driving from the bottom and going up, revealing the logo. After that, the logo starts to glow via a ray effect and the screen flashes, causing the logo to gain an emboss shining effect and the background to become plain black. The logo shines as the rays dim away.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The sound of a buzzer at the beginning. Then as the Zamboni appears, a low-toned virtual-like sound plays for the rest of the logo along with a swift-like effect when the logo flashes.

Availability: Appears on NHL 2K3 for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox.

8th Logo (Ultimate Spider-Man variant) (September 22-October 14, 2005)

Visuals: The screen zooms through a blue space full of rectangles, when Spider-Man comes on a web and jumps into the screen, where the box appears. There is a blue Treyarch knot next to the character, and the words "A TREYARCH GAME" in a Century Gothic font with "TREYARCH" in its corporate font are written below each in a single box. The logo then clears out by zooming through.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Action-type music, which finishes after the logo forms.

Availability: Appears on Ultimate Spider-Man for GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.

9th Logo (Call of Duty 2: Big Red One variant) (November 1-18, 2005)

Visuals: Starting above ground surface, we see it slowly zooming out and many projectiles fly around as there is a war. Then a rocket hits right below, making everything blow up in fire. It reveals a giant crater made by the explosion with the Treyarch logo inside, first orange from burning, then becoming black.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Sounds of firing and explosions.

Availability: Appears on Call of Duty 2: Big Red One for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox.

10th Logo (Call of Duty 3 variant) (November 7, 2006-March 23, 2007)

Visuals: The Treyarch logo appears with an orange trefoil knot. It then zooms out and seems to be a chevron on a soldier's arm. The soldier who has the logo looks in our side, while others look forward to the distant fires and prepare for the warfare.

Trivia: The print version of this logo was used on cover art of Treyarch's games until 2008.

Visuals: The logo starts with close images of the gold Treyarch knot (partially), a running Spider-Man and his spider image suit. He releases the web and jumps around, making the knot fully shown, as if it have been created from the web blasts. The knot then becomes silver as the word "TREYARCH" appears under it.

12th Logo (Spider-Man: Web of Shadows variant) (October 21-28, 2008)

Visuals: On a dark blue gradient background is the blue Treyarch knot emerging light, rotating slowly to the right and trembling violently in the process. Then metallic letters of "TREYARCH" fly and place themselves over the knot. After the text forms, the knot fades out, and a red circle with the knot appears near to the text, which itself changes to red while the background fades out.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Sounds of air and a metallic jingle.

13th Logo (Quantum of Solace variant) (October 31-November 19, 2008)

Visuals: The logo starts after the Activision animation proceeds. The camera moves above a colored surface, and there are lines in the sky. The Treyarch logo forms on the ground, with the metallic knot having an orange outline with "treyarch" in a new stylized font called Republika next to it.

Variant: At the end of the first mission, it transitions to the next scene.

14th Logo (Call of Duty: World at War variant) (November 11-14, 2008)

Visuals: There are many changing pictures of war chronicles. The movie is made as an old footage - it's grayscale and it trembles. We can briefly see the new Treyarch logo (but the text is under the logo), then it appears in full view and zooms out, changing to the Activision logo.

Variant: A placeholder version just featured the last logo fading in and out on a black background.

Technique: 2D animation coupled with live-action footage.

Audio: It starts with "Requiem" by Mozart with the sounds of a machine gun, a film projector and war marches, which turns into a long choir (being the same sound when starting a "Zombies" round) with more film projector sounds.

Availability: Can be found on Call of Duty: World at War. The placeholder logo can be found in the game's files as "treyarch_epd.bik.bik".

15th Logo (Call of Duty: Black Ops variant) (November 9, 2010)

Visuals: Again, like in the previous logo, the footage is based on pictures of warfare chronicles, mainly secret documents, until we can see the following words on them: "A Treyarch Production" with "Treyarch" bigger. Then the silver knot appears. The Activision logo with helicopters comes after this.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Sounds of electronic, paper folding and others collected together.

Availability: Can be found on Call of Duty: Black Ops.

16th Logo (Call of Duty: Black Ops II variant) (November 13-30, 2012)

Visuals: A gold flash appears, revealing a blue cybernetic background with a gold and purple retina scanner. The screen zooms to the right, and diagonally up as we then see a globe facing where The Americas are, which zooms out revealing the text "A TREYARCH PRODUCTION" in a futuristic font. We go to the left, and see what appears to be an aquamarine lens cap, which goes to the left and down diagonally, where it stops and reveals a navy circle, with the Treyarch logo from before showing up. It then fades to the Activision sequence.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Metallic-like sounds and a whoosh when the logo appears.

Availability: Can be found on Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
