Anime OP Demo

Opening (October 4, 1995 – March 27, 1996)

Visuals:

  • Scene 1: A blue drop of water ripples over a black background, seguing into a red space background. A yellow outline of a Seraphim zooms out. Fading into a blue starburst background, a blue outline of the Kabbalistic tree of life as depicted by Robert Fludd pans downward, followed by a glowing flame. The screen flashes into the EVANGELION wordmark followed by "エヴァンゲリオン" in orange zooming out below and "新世紀" flashing in above.
  • Scene 2: A headshot of Shinji over a blue sky background, as silhouettes of Shinji, Asuka and Rei appear. Shinji softly smiles.
  • Scene 3: Over a twilight background, another outline of the Kabbalistic tree of life as depicted by Athanasius Kircher appears as a silhouetted finger presses down, followed by Misato (both headshot and silhouette) looking upward. Then Misato is seen sitting down as another headshot of Shinji appears. A window with Rei inside appears, crossfading into a close-up of Rei's eye.
  • Scene 4: EVA machinery is seen as Shinji pilots EVA-1. Cuts of Gendo, Misato, Ritsuko, and Rei appear. EVA-1 is seen powering up and unleashing 12 pairs of wings made of light.
  • Scene 5: Shots of various Evangelion episodes, intercut with title cards and headshots of supporting characters. The sequence ends with a credit for Hideaki Anno, wiped away by a shot of EVA-1 zooming out, crossfading into various shots of Shinji, and then a red title card with scrawly writing.

Technique: Cel animation by Takeshi Honda and Shinya Hasegawa.

Audio: "A Cruel Angel's Thesis", sung by Yoko Takahashi.
