Background

UK Arena was launched in November 1997 as one of the four channels of the UKTV network at the time. Because it broadcasted mostly drama series, its name was changed in March 2000 to UK Drama. It was then renamed to UKTV Drama in March 2004, and then to Alibi in October 2008 when the UKTV network started to drop categorical names from its channels. With this, the channel refocused its programming to mostly crime-oriented dramas.

UK Drama

1st Logo (November 1, 1997-May 7, 2001)

Visuals: A hexagonal star is formed by either a flashing neon effect, a spinning circle or spirals. The UK Arena/UK Drama (after 2000) logo fades in at the bottom.

Technique: Realistic CG animation. This was all done by Lambie-Nairn.

Audio: A three-note leitmotif accompanied by ambient synth sounds.

2nd Logo (May 7, 2001-March 8, 2005)

Visuals: Three people fade into the screen, one lit in red, another lit in blue, and another lit in green. They all start to strike drums, with water splashing off them on each hit. The camera cuts to close ups of the water flying off the drums, and the drums being hit, mostly in the space of a second.

Variants:

  • For Christmas 2003, all UKTV channels went with idents with Christmas Card themes. UK Drama's card design featured a flaming Christmas Pudding. The channel shared the same idents with UK Gold and UK G2.

Technique: All live action, once again done by Lambie-Nairn.

Audio: Ambient sounds accompanied by the sounds of the 3 drums.

UKTV Drama
