Background

Television Singapura was founded on April 4, 1961 as the country's first television service, while the territory was under control by Malaysia during the time. It began test broadcasts during January-February 1963, and began daily broadcasts in February 15 of the same year. It operated the first two TV channels in Singapore, Channel 5 and Channel 8, with transmissions in all 4 official languages (in contrast to their current operations in English and Mandarin Chinese, respectively). In 1965, after Singapore was separated from the Malaysian Federation, all radio and television operations of Singapore merged into a new company, Radio Television Singapore (RTS), managed by the country's Ministry of Culture.
