Rapi Films

Background

Rapi Films is an Indonesian film and television production company. Originally established in 1968 by Sabirin Kasdani and Gope T. Samtani as a foreign film distributor, Rapi Films began to produce their own films in 1971. Rapi Films experienced success in the 1980s with the rise of exploitation cinema. Until today, they are mostly known for their horror films. Besides theatrical films, they also produced several television films (FTV) and soap operas (sinetron).

1st Logo (1971)

Logo: Superimposed over the opening credits, a red filmstrip "R" zooms in, followed by a red filmstrip "F", zooming in next to the "R". Then, the red text "Rapi Films presents", "Rapi Films" in red quotations, wipe in.

Technique: 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Only seen in Air Mata Kekasih, their first film.

Legacy: Given its simplicity, one-time use, and its presence as an in-credit logo, this is probably a prototype for the next logo.

2nd Logo (1972-2000)

Logo: On a spinning blue sunburst background, a red filmstrip "RF" (in the same style as the previous logo) zooms in. Then, the text "Rapi Films" in white writes itself below the "RF", followed by "presents" appearing below.

Technique: Appears to be a mix of cel animation and live-action practical effects.

Music/Sounds: Drums are heard as dramatic gamelan music plays, ending in a gong. On Joshua oh Joshua, it's silent.

Availability: Probably one of the most common logos in 20th century Indonesian cinema, given its long lifespan. It was more common and easier to find than others, but is now hard to find. Seen on films produced on the era, which is aired on FLiK TV and MNCTV prints of their films. Suzanna films are notable examples. This logo is omitted on international releases, such as Merdeka 17805, a co-production with Toho. It last appeared on Joshua oh Joshua. It's retained in Netflix prints of their films.

Legacy: The concept is reminiscent of Nikkatsu's logo at the time. Nonetheless, this is probably one of the most iconic logos of Indonesian cinema.

3rd Logo (2005)

Logo: On a multicolored background, a CGI rendition of Rapi Films' print logo (a filmstrip "R" in gold with an "f" within the "R", and a red marquee with "Rapi Films" inscribed) zooms out to a comfortable position. It then segues into the opening credits.

Technique: CGI animattion.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Only seen on Inikah Rasanya Cinta. Most Rapi Films movies of the time simply had an in-credit "RAPI FILMS PRESENTS", while television series use the logo below.

4th Logo (2005-2010s)

Logo: On a space background, three white ribbons appear zooming out. Then, three colored ribbons form on top of the other ribbons. The ribbons fade into a CGI filmstrip which forms an "Rf" (much like the previous logo). A red marquee with "Rapi Films" inscribed in yellow zooms out below.

Technique: Typical CGI animation of the period.

Music/Sounds: A swoosh, followed by a majestic fanfare.

Availability: Uncommon, but common in the past. Seen on soap operas produced by the company.

5th logo (2014-2017)

6th logo (September 20, 2017-)

Logo: On a cloudy background with a thunderstorm brewing throughout, a grayscale butterfly rises from the bottom, and flutters its wings, with smoke spewing from it. A metallic circle with the letters "RF" then rises behind the butterfly, which then flies away, revealing the text "RAPI FILMS". The logo then shines with a gold color.

Technique: CGI animation.

Music/Sounds: Various crystalline sounds accompanied by sounds of thunder. Otherwise, none or the film's opening theme.

Availability: First seen on Satan's Slaves, and can be mainly seen on their horror output, such as Impetigore and Satan's Slaves 2: Communion.
