Background

Produzioni Europee Associati (PEA) was an Italian film production and distribution company established in 1962 by Alberto Grimaldi to produce international co-productions. After the 1964 film Per un pugno di dollari succeeded in popularizing the genre, United Artists financed the rest of filmmaker Sergio Leone's films. They signed a contract to distribute its company's films. PEA lost vitality due to the growth of American cinema in 1976 and then limited its work solely to Europe.

1st Logo (April 30-November 6, 1964)

Visuals: There is a red ring in the middle sitting in front of a gold horizontal line against a dark blue background after fading in from a black background. After a few seconds, the ring shrinks and transforms into four white circles, two of which move further apart from the center of the line, while the other two move away from the line, all shrinking as four separate white lines extend behind the circles, forming a white rectangular box. As a result, a red rectangle fills in the insides by wiping in via spotlight effect. In this segment, the line is plucked three times, vibrating as it releases a white ring that moves and transforms into a "P" on the top left, an "E" on the center, and an "A" on the bottom right, all in a serif font and a 3-dimensional body. After this, the line in the middle wipes away in both directions. Lastly, a golden thin "PRESENTA" wipes in from left to right below the white box. The logo then fades out.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: Four ascending vibraphone notes with another fifth, lower-pitched note play when the logo's sequence starts, which is followed by a guitar pluck then a high-pitched vibraphone chord played at a random pitch when the line is plucked and the letters are revealed, all having a random pitch. It ends with a high-pitched vibraphone glissando. Throughout the logo, a faint harp arpeggio plays.

Availability: Seen on Rai airings of Cavalca e uccidi and I sette del Texas.

2nd Logo (December 30, 1965)

Visuals: Over a red background, there is a giant "PEA", now thicker and closer to each other in the middle with "presenta" underneath the "A".

Technique: A still cel sheet.

Audio: The theme from the 3rd Shaw Brothers Ltd. logo.

Availability: So far only seen in a 35mm Kodak copy of Per qualche dollaro in più.

3rd Logo (November 13, 1971)

Visuals: The logo starts with a set of kaleidoscopic patterns crossfading one by one with each pattern being differently colored and designed than the other. After a while, over a red background, there is similarly styled thickened "PEA" that zooms in. It then zooms back out, stopping after a few seconds.

Technique: Fading effects and camera-controlled animation.

Audio: A triumphant fanfare.

Availability: Seen on Trastevere.
