Background

Millar Gough Ink is an American television, film and book production company founded by the Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

1st Logo (October 12, 1999-November 10, 2011)

Logo: In an office setting, at the forefront, we see a bottle filled with scarlet ink in it labeled the stacked words reading with the company name in an Impact font colored in gold, with only the bottom half of the word "INK" in white/silver. After a while, a split-second before the logo ends, a hammer (which can be seen coming down in the bottle's reflection if the viewer looks very closely) swings down and breaks the bottle, causing the ink in it to spread everywhere, covering up the whole screen.

Variant: There exists an open-matte version of the logo.

Technique: All live-action.

Music/Sounds:

  • 2001-2002: Just the sound of the bottle breaking.
  • February 2002-May 2002: An odd, three-note piano tune, accompanied by an eerie noise.
  • 2002-2011: A reverberating cartoon ditty.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On the Smallville season 1 episodes "X-Ray" and "Hug", the bottle breaking sound is absent.
  • On early season 2 episodes of Smallville, the reverberating cartoon ditty is somewhat slightly quieter before the bottle breaking sound appears.
  • Original airings use a generic theme and a voice over.
  • On The Strip, the closing theme of the show before the splattering sound.

Availability: Common. First seen on The Strip. Also later seen on Smallville, the 2006 TV pilot of Aquaman and the 2011 reboot of Charlie's Angels. Don't expect to see this on the company's films, though.

Legacy: For the variant with only the bottle breaking sound, it would be be startling to some people (especially the variant without music where it breaks with no warning, which could be jarring to many people). However, for the music variant, it is slightly less-scary with the music playing. The logo may be favored for fans of Smallville.

2nd Logo (November 15, 2015-)

Logo: On a black background, we see the stacked red words "MILLAR GOUGH". To the right of it is a red beaker with a big black water-drop in it, and inside the water-drop is the red text "INK".

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: None, or the ending theme of the show.

Availability: Seen on Into the Badlands, The Shannara Chronicles and the Neflix seriesWednesday.

Legacy: None.
