Background

Millar Gough Ink is an American television and film production company founded in 1997 by the Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. They are known from having co-produced television series such as Smallville.

1st Logo (October 12, 1999-November 10, 2011)


Logo: In an office setting, at the forefront, we see a bottle filled with orange red ink in it labeled with the company name in an Impact font colored in a gold-white gradient. After one of the music variants are heard, a hammer (which, if you look at the bottle very closely, you can see a hammer coming down in the reflection) swings down and breaks the bottle, causing the ink in it to spread everywhere, covering up the whole screen.

Variants:

  • There exists an open-matte version of the logo.
  • An less-cropped version of the logo exists. This can also be seen on 2003 DVD releases of the entire 1st season, as well as Channel 4, E4 and ITV2 British airings of season 1 episodes of Smallville.

FX/SFX: Live-action animation. The live-action animated logo was made by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

Music/Sounds: Depending on the variant:

  • 1999-2000: The closing theme of the show, along with the splattering sound.
  • 2001-2002: Just the sound of a bottle breaking.
  • February 2002-May 2002: An odd, three-note piano tune.
  • 2002-2011: A reverberating cartoon ditty.

All music variants end with the bottle breaking sound or the splattering sound. Sometimes, louder. Music and sound design created by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On the Smallville season 1 episodes "X-Ray" and "Hug", the bottle breaking sound is absent.
  • On early season 2 episodes of Smallville, such as "Vortex", the reverberating cartoon ditty is somewhat slightly quieter before the bottle breaking sound appears.
  • Original airings use a generic theme and a voice over.

Availability: Common. First seen on the 1999-2000 UPN series The Strip. Also later seen on Smallville and the 2011 reboot of Charlie's Angels, which aired on American Broadcasting Company. It also made an appearance on the 2006 TV pilot of Aquaman, which was initially released on iTunes by Apple Inc. on July 2006 and later included as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray Disc release of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.

2nd Logo (November 15, 2015-)

Logo: On a black background, we see the stacked red words "MILLAR GOUGH" in a Helvetica Neue font. To the right of it is a beaker with a black water-drop in it, and inside the water-drop, we see the red text "INK".

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None, or the ending theme of the show.

Availability: Seen on the 2015-2018 AMC series Into the Badlands and the 2016-2017 MTV series The Shannara Chronicles. It's expected to appear on the 2022 upcoming Netflix TV series Wednesday.
