Background

Millar Gough Ink is an American television and film production company, which are known from having co-produced television series such as Smallville. The company was founded in 1997 by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

1st Logo (October 12, 1999-November 10, 2011)

Logo: In the room of an office setting, at the forefront, we see a bottle filled with orange red ink in it labeled with the company name in an Impact font colored in gold, with only the bottom half of "INK" in silver. After one of the music variants are heard, a hammer (which, however, if you look at the bottle very closely, you can see a hammer coming down in the reflection on the bottle) appears then comes down and breaks the bottle, causing the orange red ink in it to spread everywhere, covering up the whole screen.

Variants:

  • There exists an open-matte version of the logo. This can be seen on the short-lived series The Strip and some 4:3 prints of Smallville. Also seen on Channel 4 and E4 British airings of early season 1 episodes of the said show.
  • There also exists an less-cropped version of the logo. This can also be seen on 2003 DVD releases of the entire 1st season as well as Channel 4, E4 and ITV2 British airings of later season 1 episodes of Smallville.

FX/SFX: It's all live-action.

Music/Sounds: Here are the main music variants:

  • 1999-2000: After the closing theme of the show is heard, for the result, there is an ink spreading sound instead of the bottle breaking sound.
  • 2001-2002: No music is heard along with the Tollin/Robbins Productions logo.
  • February 2002-May 2002: An odd, short 3-note piano tune, accompanied by an eerie sound effect.
  • 2002-2011: An 13-note organ ditty is played along with the 7-note instrumental tune, followed by a last note with the bottle breaking sound in it.

Both music variants end with the bottle breaking sound for the 2001 to 2011 variants or the ink spreading sound for the 1999-2000 variant. Music and sound design created by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

Music/Sounds Variants: Here are the variants of the main music variants:

  • On a few Smallville season 1 episodes "X-Ray" and "Hug", the bottle breaking sound is absent.
  • On early episodes of the entire 2nd season of Smallville such as "Vortex", the organ ditty is even a little quieter.

Availability: Common. First seen on the short 1999-2000 UPN series The Strip. Also later seen on the 2001-2011 The CW and The WB series Smallville and the 2011 remade series Charlie's Angels based upon the 1976-1981 series of the same name on American Broadcasting Company, Crackle by Sony and in Canada on the Canadian Television Throwback. It's also later seen on the 2006 standalone television series Aquaman, which was initially released on iTunes by Apple Inc. on July 2006 and was later included as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray Disc release of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.

2nd Logo (November 15, 2015-)

Logo: On a black background, we see the stacked dark red words "MILLAR GOUGH" in a Helvetica Neue font. To the right of it is a beaker with a black water-drop in it, and inside the water-drop, we see the dark red text "INK".

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None, or the ending theme of the show.

Availability: Seen on the 2015-2018 AMC series Into the Badlands and the 2016-2017 MTV series The Shannara Chronicles.
