Background

Emmeritus Productions was a film company based in Hamilton, Ontario, formed by Lionel Shenken around 1984. The company produced a large quantity of low budget shot-on-video movies, many of which were made to be aired on television. The company made use of a number of shortcuts and cost-cutting measures such as using the same actors across each production and limiting the amount of days for shoots and certain scenes with the intent of giving each film a 95 minute runtime. The company became a noted figure in what was dubbed the Canuxploitation movement due to the quantity of the company's productions and their incorporation of Canadian culture. The company would effectively shut down in 1989 with Shenken joining Dandelion, a British distributor who released Emmeritus titles in the United Kingdom, in a deal that lasted until 1996.[1]
