Background

Super Écran is a Canadian premium television network owned by Bell Media. Launched in February 1, 1983 under the name Premier Choix, the channel was licensed by the CRTC to provide a national 24-hour French language pay television network. In 1984, the channel, along with TVEC were fused to form Premier Choix: TVEC, then renamed to its current name in October 1984.

1st Logo (1984-1988)

Visuals: On a zooming blue space background, four movie filmstrips, with the first two in a diagonal direction in blue and red, with the last two in a horizontal-vertical direction in green and yellow start to move out in order. After that, a white explosion occurs behind, with the filmstrips being cut in half and rapidly slide out of the screen. A red diagonal star begins to zoom in from the distance, with two blue lasers writing the text "Super Ecran" which flashes, with a yellow filmstrip scrolling through the edge of the star. When it's fully complete, it all glows in.

Technique: Scanimation.

Audio: A triumphant fanfare which is possible stock music, with then segues into an explosion, then into another triumphant fanfare with laser sounds.

Availability: Used in tandem with the next ident.

2nd Logo (1986-1988)

Visuals:

  • 1986-1987: On a purple-gradient themed background, a gold 3D filmstrip scrolls over the screen, as another gold filmstrip scrolls over with the inside being a blue background with various silver outlined stars inside it with silver stars inside it, all shaped as a sphere as we get inside it. The sphere with the outlined silver stars flatten, as the sphere with the silver stars fly out of the screen. Another gold filmstrip with the purple gradient background inside it scrolls below, with silver stars following each section of the strips. Another gold filmstrip reaches halfway the screen, which has the red diagonal star inside it. The text "Super Ecran" zooms out and settles over the star, as the yellow filmstrips reach the edge of the star, which then flashes by star particles when fully complete.
  • 1987-88: Same as above, except the star is small and is positioned at the right. The texts "SUPER" and "ECRAN" slide from both sides below the star, with the text "LE CANAL DE FILMS" zooming out and being revealed by white particles, settling below "ECRAN".

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A playful-sounding fanfare with a whoosh when the logo is fully formed, sometimes accompanied with a French announcer.

3rd ID (1988-Early 1993)

Visuals: Starting on a black background, which sooner reveals a black-purple gradient background, a series of white stars with a rainbow-ish trail scroll in various places. The gold diagonal star along with "SUPER ECRAN" begin to zoom out and stand in place, and begin to turn red and white. One of the white stars slide through the red star, leaving the yellow filmstrips next to the edge of the star. The white star then slides through the text, forming the text "LE CANAL DE FILMS" and the byline for Astral Communications.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A synth fanfare with whooshes.

4th ID (1993-1994)

Visuals: On a black background with a metallic floor below, the screen pans through rectangles with movie clips on them, whilst the texts "SUPER" and "ÉCRAN" slide on both sides. After the fourth rectangle, the camera moves downward as the rectangles turn red, yellow, green and blue with the text "SUPER ÉCRAN" underneath. The text "LA TÉLÉ DU CINÉMA", along with the Astral Communications byline fade below.

Variant: For their 10th anniversary in 1993, the text "10 ANS... ET BIEN PLUS EN VUE" replaces the former with the byline in the bottom-right corner, small.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A soft, deep flute-like tune with a deep whoosh, and with piano tones, and a ascending synth note which is being held out, composed by Gilles Desnoyers.

5th ID (1994?-1995)

Visuals: Starting on a black background, which then fades to a dark white-cyan marble background, a red bar streak wipes to the right, then a blue bar streak wiping to the bottom, a green bar streak wiping to the left, then a yellow bar streak to the bottom, which was all facing upwards, then settling into place. The text "SUPER ÉCRAN" facing upward zooms out and settles below the logo, as the text "LA TÉLÉ DU CINÉMA" and the Astral Communications byline fade in underneath. A light can be seen lighting up the background, fading out later.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A train-like sound with four synth notes, then the ascending synth note from before.

Availability: Possibly used in tandem with the next ident.
