Background

Ciné+ OCS is a group of six premium channels, dedicated to showcasing movies and tv shows of various genres, owned by Canal+ which launched in its current form on July 3rd 2024. Previously known separately as Ciné+ (itself formerly known as CinéCinémas then Ciné Cinéma) and OCS (formerly known as Orange Cinéma Séries) before merging together, Ciné+ OCS is essentially the cinema equivalent to Canal+'s main offerings, each channel showcasing different programs that correspond to either their theme or their intended audience. As of the merger on July 3rd 2024, this set of channels includes:

  • OCS, previously known as Ciné+ Premier, the main channel of the package, showcasing a wide array of well-known movies.
  • Ciné+ Frisson, showcasing action movies, thrillers and occasionally a few tv shows.
  • Ciné+ Emotion, showcasing movies with themes of love and emotion.
  • Ciné+ Family, previously known as Ciné+ Famiz, showcasing movies for the entire family.
  • Ciné+ Festival, previously known as Ciné+ Club, showcasing independent movies.
  • Ciné+ Classic, showcasing mostly old black and white movies from the past.

A seventh channel was also part of this set, Ciné+ Star, but was shut down on August 30th 2013.

The entire set of OCS channels was also shut down on July 3rd 2024, following the merger with the Ciné+ channels. These channels, originally owned by Internet and phone service provider Orange, were originally launched on November 13th 2008 exclusively on Orange's set-top boxes. This set of channels would eventually begin to be bought out by Canal+ in 2011, causing the rebrand to simply OCS in September 2012 namely because of becoming available on other providers outside of Orange. The OCS channels would become entirely owned by Canal+ in 2023. The lineup of channels part of OCS as of July 2nd 2024 was comprised of:

  • OCS Max, the main channel of the package, which showcased a number of original productions by OCS along with programming for all audiences.
  • OCS Pulp, which showcased thrillers and action movies as well as independent productions.
  • OCS Géants, which showcased cult classics from the past.

With the following channels having shut down over the years:

  • OCS Happy, whose family-themed programming was fused into OCS Max.
  • OCS Novo, which was renamed to OCS City.
  • OCS City, whose remaining programming, following the contract between OCS and HBO expiring, was fused with OCS Choc to form OCS Pulp.
  • OCS Choc, whose action and horror-themed programming was fused with OCS City to form OCS Pulp.

Ciné+

IDs (May 17th 2011 - July 3rd 2024)

Visuals: On a background of various shades of grey, lines move in a wipe effect from right to left with the Ciné+ logo standing still on the left.

Variants: What is described above is the animation used for the breakfiller early in the morning. However, this concept is used across all of the channels with different visuals. Their respective sequences start as normal as a few transparent lines fade in and out, showing a mirrored image of the sequence corresponding to where the line is. At the end of the sequence, more lines appear before they move across the screen with that same wipe effect from right to left which causes the Ciné+ logo to appear along with the channel's subtitle underneath.

  • Ciné+ Premier: On a red background filled with spotlights, the camera zooms forward through them.
  • Ciné+ Frisson: In a green-tinted area within what seems to be a closet, the camera slowly zooms upwards until small sources of light appear through the gaps, around 13 of them. In time with the lines, two shadows quickly pass by.
  • Ciné+ Emotion: Moving from left to right on a pink background, smoke can be seen along droplets of water on the background itself.
  • Ciné+ Famiz: On a yellow and blue background, a number of bubbles fly across the screen.
  • Ciné+ Star: In a purple-tinted room, the camera passes by the shadow of a fan near a curtain before cutting to its side.
  • Ciné+ Club: The camera zooms out from a number of multicolored rectangles, with a square constantly changing colors in the middle.
  • Ciné+ Classic: A view from above shows a woman going down a spiral staircase before heading out. The camera moves in a circular shape as with the stairs.
  • In general, these idents have a short and long version.

Technique: Generally, CGI is used for the animation, with some channels also using live-action.

Audio: Each channel has its own soundtrack, corresponding to its theme. A recurring leitmotif, however, is the use of 4 choir notes at the end.

Audio Variants:

  • Cross-promotions used a medley comprised of each channel's theme. In later years, a shortened version was instead used as the promo itself became much shorter.
  • As mentioned above, each channel has its own soundtrack to fit with its respective theme:
    • Ciné+ Premier used a rousing orchestra with male and female choirs.
    • Ciné+ Frisson used high-pitched violin strings with gunshot sounds, ending with a female choir.
    • Ciné+ Emotion used a soft synth theme and a female choir.
    • Ciné+ Famiz used an upbeat synth theme with male and female choirs.
    • Ciné+ Star used a mix of acoustic and bass guitars and a female choir.
    • Ciné+ Club used an atmospheric theme with soft violins and a female choir.
    • Ciné+ Classic used a classical piano with violins and a female choir.

Availability: Each channel's ident is available on archival websites, along with the breakfiller, cross-promotions and a few intros to some programs.

Trivia:

  • The Ciné+ name was previously used by the Kiosque pay-per-view service, namely for its cinema section. Due to the May 17th 2011 rebranding, the Kiosque service was renamed to Canalplay.
  • As explained on Ale Kino+'s page for its 2011 rebranding, elements from Ciné+ Premier, Frisson and Club were used for specific intros.
  • Out of all of the channels that had gotten a rebranding on May 17th 2011, Ciné+'s lasted the longest. As Sport+, Cuisine+ and Maison+ shut down while Infosport+ and Comédie+ rebranded, Ciné+'s own branding was left virtually unchanged despite a few updates up until the merger with OCS.

OCS

(November 13th 2008 - September 22nd 2012)

Visuals: On a black background, various scenes and clichés related to each channel's theme are played out either straight or in a humorous way. The scene then fades to black, with the logo of the channel fading in on a colored background. Silhouettes dressed in dark grey can also be seen in the background, placing props in real time to create an illusion.

Trivia: These silhouettes were present during the launch of Orange Cinéma Séries, where they held screens showcasing each channel's logo, moving them around. This is said to be replicating the corresponding branding of the channels, which relied heavily on screens.

Variants: Each ident is meant to reference a movie, a show or a general trope found in either, while fitting with the channel's theme.

Technique: Disbarring CGI for the logos's animation, live-action is constantly used, the silhouettes placing the props replacing the use of CGI.

Audio: Each ident has a unique soundtrack to fit with its visual.

Availability: Many of these idents are available to view on archival websites, where names were also given to each of them. The launch promo and a few other promos are also available.

(September 22nd 2012 - October 10th 2013)

Visuals: A material or a liquid converges into the center of the screen, forming the OCS logo. Once fully formed, the subtitle of the channel appears underneath.

Variants: The only differences between the idents are the material/liquid and the subtitle's animation. Some channels also use different means of making the logo appear, besides the convergence described above.

  • OCS Max: Droplets, stars or glitter. The "MAX" subtitle appears with a letter-by-letter fade.
  • OCS Happy: Colorful beads, petals or confetti. The "HAPPY" subtitle appears with a letter-by-letter rotation.
  • OCS Choc: Blood, rain or slime. The "choc" subtitle appears with each part sliding in to form the letters.
  • OCS Novo: Smoke or mist, with one of the idents showing the OCS logo emerging from the mist. The "novo" subtitle appears with a fade from a blur.
  • OCS Géants: Each ident shows the OCS logo as a spotlight before moving to the center of the screen. The "géants" subtitle appears with such a spotlight shining over it.

Technique: CGI

Audio: As with before, each ident has a unique soundtrack to coincide with its visuals.

Availability:

Trivia: Although the branding had changed along with the name, the screens from the previous branding were still in use until October 10th 2013.
