Background

Wolfe Video was founded in 1985 by Kathy Wolfe, initially as a mail-order service. Over time, the outfit grew into the world's leading exclusive distributor of LGBTQ+ movies. They've also launched Wolfe Releasing, a theatrical acquisition and distribution arm, and Wolfe on Demand, a digital movie provider.

1st Logo (Early 1990s-October 21, 2003)

Logo: Fading on a black background, we see a white illustration of a wolf's head looking to the left with two white-black gradient horizontal rectangles, with one of them having a trademark symbol at the right. Upwards is two white-black gradient horizontal lines, one thin and one thick, which has "Wolfe Video" above them, and downwards is "DISTRIBUTION" spaced out. The two horizontal lines alongside "Wolfe Video" glow with a purple color before turning into normal.

Technique: Computer animation.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Rare. This can be found on early Wolfe releases, such as The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, Cynara: Poetry in Motion, Thin Ice, Green Plaid Shirt, Broadway Damage, It's in the Water, Finding North, Claire of the Moon, Big Eden, and Friends & Family (the final release to use it).

2nd Logo (February 17, 2004-)

Logo: On a black background, various red triangles fly in from the screen, forming a cartoon wolf. "Wolfe" fades in underneath, and the wolf rises up to howl. Just after it finishes, the logo slowly fades out.

Variants:

  • In 2011, the logo was re-animated in HD, with a different framerate for the animation, a less prominent registered trademark symbol, and a gradient effect on the wolf. It also stays on-screen slightly longer and fades out quicker. This variant was first used on A Marine Story.
  • On Boy Meets Girl, the logo is windowboxed.
  • On many Wolfe trailers, the logo is shortened to the wolf raising its head.
    • On the trailers for All About E (original) and Heartland, the logo fades in and out.
    • On the trailer for Mario, the logo cuts in and fades out rather than the other way around.
    • On the trailers for All About E (final) and Girls Lost, the logo cuts in and out.
  • On the trailer for Hot Guys with Guns, as well as Wolfe company promos seen at the start of their more recent releases, the wolf is formed at a much faster rate.

Technique: 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: A glittering sound mixed with small whooshes, followed by two bell notes, and the sound of a wolf's howl.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On Hulu's print of All About E, the audio is in a lower pitch.
  • On the short version, the howling fades out early.
    • Some trailers, such as Henry Gamble's Birthday Party, Anchor and Hope, Just Friends, Adam, Jules of Light and Dark, and Milkwood, use the trailer's audio instead.
    • A silent version is used on the trailers for Margarita with a Straw and Retablo.
    • On the trailers for Heartland and Nevrland, the fade-out is less abrupt.
  • On the company promos, the start of the promo's song replaces the standard music, though the howling is intact. This also occurs on the trailers for White Frog, Pit Stop, Hurricane Bianca, and Girls Lost.

Availability: Common.

  • It can be found on Wolfe Video releases on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital/streaming outlets (including their own Wolfe on Demand), beginning with On_Line.
  • It also appears at the end of the "Tales You Win!" company promo, which appears before the "More from Wolfe" menu on their 2006 DVD of Loving Annabelle.
  • The short version, complete with the shortened audio, can be found on the trailers for White Frog, Pit Stop, Boy Meets Girl, Summer, Desi's Looking for a New Girl, Women He's Undressed, Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson, the Blu-ray of Big Eden, Late Bloomers, Coming Out, Akron, Jonathan, Heartland, Counting for Thunder, Venus, Mario, Hard Paint, Russian Doll, Seventeen, Where We Go from Here, An Almost Ordinary Summer, More Beautiful for Having Been Broken, and Good Kisser. Other trailers from prior to 2018 use the full logo instead.
