Background

Tomson Film (湯臣電影) was set up in 1984 by late Taiwanese entrepreneur Tong Cun Nin (湯君年, 1948-2004) and his actress wife Hsu Feng (徐楓) under their Tomson Group. Notable films included Red Dust (滾滾紅塵, 1990), Farewell my Concubine (霸王別姬, 1993) and Temptress Moon (風月, 1996), the latter two starring Leslie Cheung (張國榮) and directed by Chen Kaige (陳凱歌).

After taking a long break, Tomson relaunched in 2010 as Tomson International Entertainment Distribution Ltd (湯臣國際娛樂發行有限公司) with strong focus on film production and distribution, and their first project was Starry Starry Night (星空, 2011), an adaptation of renowned Taiwanese author Jimmy Liao's (幾米) illustration book of the same name.

1st Logo (1985?-1993?)

Logo: On a dark background, many blue rainy lines drops over the screen, which causing to sync into the sounds to the animation. Another rainy lines pass by, and the rainy lines forms the two Chinese letters in silvery blue, as the green Chinese and English company names fades in below on a black/beige gradient background.

Technique: Motion-controlled cel animation.

Music/Sounds: A dreamy, twinkling sounds when the rain lines drops, and a synth fanfare is heard with a whooshes when the Chinese text and a company name fading in. Sometimes, it's silent or has opening theme of the film.

Availability: Very rare; this was seen on Runaway Blues.

2nd Logo (1993-1996?)

Logo: On a golden-tinted space background, a water drops on the screen, causing it to "ripples", and it turns into a gold/yellow background made of liquid-like sheet. The abstract "T" on a rectangle and the Chinese company name, along with "Presents" in Chinese and horizontal line between "T" and the company name below, appears via "slides" effect.

Technique: Motion-controlled CGI and a cel animation.

Music/Sounds: Silent or has the opening theme of the film.

Availability: Seen on Farewell my Concubine (1993)
