Background

Realtime Associates is an American video game developer and publisher based in El Segundo, California. The company was founded in 1986 by David Warhol and a group of ex-Mattel Electronics employees, originally to create games for the Intellivision system. Since then, the company has developed and published over 90 games for various game systems.

1st Logo (1994-1995)

Visuals: There is a black rectangle containing the multicolored text "realtime associates". The rectangle is situated above a living room.

Technique: A still, sprite-based graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on Normy's Beach Babe-o-Rama for Sega Genesis and Cartoon Network's 'Toon Jam! for PC.

2nd Logo (1994-1995)

Visuals: Against a black background, there is a dark red rectangle with three stripes above and below the rectangle. Over it is a large letter "R", which is almost cut-out. Under it are the words "REALTIME associates INC" in stacked lines, with "REALTIME" in the first line inside the top red stripe with a dark red circle around the "R", "associates" in the second line on the white stripe, and "INC" spaced-out in the third line on the dark red stripe.

Technique: A still, sprite-based graphic.

Audio: None. The game's title theme on the Sega Genesis version.

Availability: Only appears on Warlock when the player enters a hidden code via Game Genie or Pro Action Replay on the game. It replaces the LJN and Trimark logos on the Super NES version and replaces the options menu on the Sega Genesis version, unless the code is turned off.

3rd Logo (November 1995-2008)

Visuals: Over a peach background are many humans and animals hurrying across the screen, each having a plate with a letter instead of their head:

  • A giraffe with a yellow plate with "R" on it runs in from the left with a person wearing a pink outfit with blue pants with a blue-green plate with "e" with eyelashes above it with its red shadow behind it, who rides the giraffe from behind, then gets off it and stands while the giraffe sits down.
  • An orange dog jumps forward and wiggles its tail with a tan plate with "A" on it and an eye and teeth on it.
  • An orange four-legged chair rolls in from the bottom, and a woman wearing a green dress with a blue plate with "L" on it falls from the top and sits on it.
  • A woman wearing a red outfit with white polka-dots carrying her purse with a purple plate with "T" on it comes up from an elevator and walks in.
  • A man wearing a blue shirt with an orange plate with "I" on it jumps in from the right doing backflips, then an orange star bounces in landing on top of the plate, before he stands on one leg.
  • A football player wearing red shorts and white socks with a pink plate with "m" on it runs in, then kicks and stands still.
  • A man wearing a blue striped shirt and a hat hanging onto a green plate with "e" on it slides through, then comes back and keeps hanging onto his plate.

All the plates are a different design and the characters take their places in various positions, forming the word "ReALTIme". "ASSoCiaTES, INC." in a custom comic font slides in from the left and right respectively, and collides on the bottom right of the logo.

Variants: There are many color variants, as well as still versions.

  • The logo sometimes takes place on a white background.
  • Charlie Blast's Territory for Nintendo 64 has a blue background.
  • Magic the Gathering: Battlemage for PlayStation has a coffee background with stars.
  • Rugrats: Scavenger Hunt for Nintendo 64 is the same, but has emboss and spotlight effects.
  • On NBA Live '97 for Sega Saturn, the logo is animated on a basketball. Also, the camera zooms into the logo. Then the camera pans into the ground and the credits start rolling. This appears when "CREDITS" is selected from the main menu.

Technique: Traditional 2D animation.

Audio: Noises made by the characters, thuds and snaps, similar to a wooden board knocking the floor, all followed by a spring sound.

Audio Variants:

  • On the games mentioned below, it's silent.
  • On NBA Live '97 for Sega Saturn, there is people chanting "Realtime", instead of the native logo sounds.

Availability:

  • It was first seen on the Game Boy and Game Gear versions of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Frank Thomas' Big Hurt Baseball.
  • The animated standard version didn't debut until the release of Bug Too! for Sega Saturn. Also appears on the Saturn version of NBA Live '97 in the credits FMV as well.
  • This logo was in regular use until 2001, although it appeared on three more games afterwards: Intellivision Lives!, Re-Mission, and the LeapFrog Didj version of Sonic The Hedgehog (released in 2008).
