Background

Planet 24 was a television production company initially founded as Planet Pictures by Bob Geldof and Tony Boland in 1992. They would soon merge with 24 Hour Productions, renaming the company to Planet 24. In March 1999, Carlton Communications acquired the company and would soon merge with Carlton Productions several years later.

1st Logo (September 28, 1992-1996)

Visuals: On a white background, the 3D gold letters "PLANET 24" flip in individually while a turquoise star flies above and turns around, aiming to orbit around "ET" in "PLANET" while a dark purple box fades in. The star then stops underneath the number "2", creating a ring shape. Additional credits may appear below.

Variant: On Delicious, the logo appears within the 1995 Carlton UK Productions logo.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: Two descending chimes when the star orbits around "ET". Otherwise, none or the ending theme of the programme.

  • Archival sites such as Screenocean has this logo intact.

2nd Logo (1996-September 29, 2004)

Visuals: On a still sunburst background, with a very dark purple box in the center, several lens flare rapidly fly in and form the text from before from right to left, showing them with more shine. They have also left smoke floating within the box. After all of this, a green star flies in from the left and proceeds to orbit around the section "ET 2", creating a green ring and then stopping in between the two words.

Variants:

  • A copyright stamp may appear underneath the logo. Sometimes, it includes the Channel 4 name.
    • On The Big Breakfast, the copyright notice is purple and lower.
  • On Gaytime TV, this logo shares the screen with the 1988 BBC logo.
  • Like many other co-produced Channel 4 variants in the early 2000's, this logo appears on the left side of the screen with its background intact and said network's 1999 "Square" logo on the right.
  • On Can You Pull..., the logo is wider and shorter and the background is white.
  • On the 2001 holiday episode of The Big Breakfast, there is snow falling within the logo.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: Several reverbed whooshes when the text appears, followed by a sleeker rendition of the two chimes from before. Otherwise, none or the ending theme of the programme.
