Background

Nokia Corporation (natively Nokia Oyj, referred to as Nokia; stylized as NOKIA) is a Finnish multinational telecommunications, information technology, and consumer electronics corporation, established in 1865. Nokia's main headquarters are in Espoo, Finland, in the greater Helsinki metropolitan area, but the company's actual roots are in the Tampere region of Pirkanmaa. In 2020, Nokia employed approximately 92,000 people across over 100 countries, did business in more than 130 countries, and reported annual revenues of around €23 billion. Nokia is a public limited company listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange. It is the world's 415th-largest company measured by 2016 revenues according to the Fortune Global 500, having peaked at 85th place in 2009. It is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index.

Logo: On a gradient background (a blue-white gradient on color phones), we see two hands, an adult's on the left and a child's on the right, reaching out. "NOKIA" in its corporate font (and in dark blue on color phones) is seen below.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds:

• The last 5-notes of the "Nokia Tune" ringtone, which is an excerpt of Gran Vals by Francisco Tárrega.
• On some phones, the boot screen is silent.

Availability: Can be seen on early Nokia models, such as the Nokia 3310 and the Nokia 6110.

2nd Logo (2001-2012)

Logo: The same concept as the previous bootscreen, now put into motion. The hands from before appear with the Nokia logo below and proceed to meet in a hand-holding/shake gesture.

Technique: Live-action (pixel animation on older devices).

Music/Sounds: Same as before. The jingle would slightly vary between models depending on the phone's audio capabilities.

Availability: Seen on Nokia models from the period, such as the Nokia 6310i and the Nokia 1315.

3rd Logo (2002-2012)

Logo: A redone version of the previous bootscreen. This time, the hands are seen from a wider angle and emerge from either side of the screen rather than already starting in the frame. Additionally, the Nokia logo is smaller and doesn't fade in until the hands meet.

Variant: At the end of a promotional video, the slogan "CONNECTING PEOPLE" would be under "NOKIA". The animation is also smoother and fades to white.

Technique: Live-action.

Music/Sounds: Same as before.

Music/Sounds Variants:

• Some models, including the N73, E63, 5310, N95 and 7230 add a shimmering sound near the end of the jingle.
• A guitar version of the jingle was used on some later models such as the N97 and C600.
• A piano based version was used on the 8800.
• A different guitar version was used on the 8800 Sirroco.
• The Nokia 110, one of the final phones to boot with the hands animation, used a xylophone-based version of the jingle. This would continue to be used with the new bootscreen introduced in 2013.

Availability: No longer current. Seen on Nokia phones at the time.

4th Logo (2011-)

Logo: Two ripples appear at either side of the screen which meet together and after that a third ripple appears in the center with the Nokia logo bouncing. Starting in 2013, it's just the Nokia logo appearing in white on a black screen.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The xylophone version of the last bootscreen's jingle.

Music/Sounds Variants:

• The Nokia N9 used the xylophone version with the last note note more pronounced.
• The Asha 500 and the first Lumia phones used a music box-style version of the theme
• The 108 used a more twinkly version of the jingle
• The Nokia 6 used a remixed version of the xylophone jingle
• The Nokia 1, 8110 4G and 6300 4G used a lower-pitched remix of the jingle.

Availability: Current. Seen on Nokia feature phones starting in 2013 and on Nokia smartphones starting in 2011.
