Background

Nokia Corporation (natively Nokia Oyj, referred to as Nokia; stylized as NOKIA) is a Finnish multinational telecommunications, information technology, and consumer electronics corporation, established in 1865. Nokia's main headquarters are in Espoo, Finland, in the greater Helsinki metropolitan area, but the company's actual roots are in the Tampere region of Pirkanmaa. In 2020, Nokia employed approximately 92,000 people across over 100 countries, did business in more than 130 countries, and reported annual revenues of around €23 billion. Nokia is a public limited company listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange. It is the world's 415th-largest company measured by 2016 revenues according to the Fortune Global 500, having peaked at 85th place in 2009. It is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market indeex.

Visuals: On a gradient background (a blue-white gradient on color phones), static image of two hands, an adult's on the left and a child's on the right, reaching out. Logo is styled as "NOKIA" in the Eurostile Squared font (dark blue on color-display phones) is seen below. The logo is relatively larger on phones with wider displays and vice versa.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio:

• A theme composed by Ian Livingstone, inspired by the last 5-notes of the "Nokia Tune" ringtone, which is an excerpt of Gran Vals by Francisco Tárrega. Depending on the phone's capabilities, the audio is either in AMR or MIDI format.
• On all phones before the Nokia 6310 and certain devices such as Nokia 1100, 2100 and 2300, the boot screen is silent.

Availability: Can be seen on early Nokia models, such as the Nokia 6110 up to the Nokia 3200.

2nd Logo (2000-2012)

Visuals: The same concept as the previous startup screen, animated. The hands from before appear with the Nokia logo below and proceed to meet in a hand-holding/shake gesture. Nokia logo is flatter on devices with monochrome displays, except for the feature phones that run on Series 30.

Technique: CGI (pixel animation on older devices). Sequence of images instead of animation in certain Nokia phones made for Asia.

Audio: Same as before. The jingle would slightly vary between models depending on the phone's audio capabilities, either in AMR or MIDI format. No sound in devices before the 6310 such as Nokia 3610, 5510, 5210 and 3410.

Availability: Seen on almost all Nokia models, starting from the Nokia 3610 from 2000 until the Nokia 2135.

3rd Logo (2002-2012)

Visuals: A redone live-action version of the previous startup screen. The hands are seen from a wider angle on wider-screened devices and emerge from either side of the screen rather than already starting in the frame. Additionally, the Nokia logo is smaller and doesn't fade in until the hands meet.

Variants:

• At the end of promotional videos, the slogan "CONNECTING PEOPLE" would be under "NOKIA". The animation is smoother and fades to white.
• On the N900, the fade in on the Nokia logo is much quicker and the screen would fade out black afterwards.
• On Series 40 devices, the Nokia logo is larger, and is seen before the hands meet. The animation is slower, except on the devices with a relatively higher screen resolution such as 240x320.
• The logo is a static image on low-end Series 40 devices , as well as the Nokia 6650 from 2003.

Technique: Live-action/None.

Audio: The jingle from before, in either MIDI or AMR for most lower-end devices, or in a higher-resolution audio format for most upper-end devices.

Audio Variants:

• On most Symbian and high-end models before 2008, it uses the original audio version, featuring the theme played on a vibraphone with strings on the background.
• Some models between 2007 and 2011 add a shimmering sound near the end of the jingle.
• A guitar version of the jingle was used on some post-2008 models such as the N97 and 6700. This was the first startup sound composed by Henry Daw and Hannu af Ursin.
• A unique piano based version composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto was used on the 8800.
• A unique guitar version composed by Brian Eno was used on the 8800 Sirocco.
• Models released since 2011, including the last Symbian phones and all other feature phones used a marimba-based version of the jingle since 2011, also composed by Henry Daw. This would continue to be used with the new startup screen introduced in the same year.

Availability: Seen on almost all Nokia phones until 2013. ^[Examples?]

4th Logo (2011-)

Visuals: Two ripples appear at either side of the screen which meet together and after that a third ripple appears in the center with the Nokia logo bouncing. Only exclusive to the Nokia N9.

Later Variant: Starting in 2013, it's just the Nokia logo appearing in white on a black screen.

Technique: CGI. For the later variant, none.

Audio: The marimba version of the guitar jingle.

Audio Variants:

• The Nokia phones released between 2011 and 2014 had used the marimba version with the last note note more pronounced.
• The Asha 500 and the first Lumia phones used a pitched-up mbira version.
• The Series 30+ feature phones, starting from the 108, use a MIDI version of the jingle above.
• The Nokia devices from 2017 use an accompaniment with the marimba jingle.
• The Nokia devices from 2018 to date use a slowed down version of the 2013 jingle.
• All of the above startup sounds were composed by Henry Daw, except the Series 30+ version.

Availability: Seen on Nokia feature phones starting from 2013 to date and on Nokia smartphones starting from 2011.

5th Logo (2018-)

Nokia boot animation from 2018, used to date.

Visuals: The animation starts with a green and white Android One logo, that sweeps away to reveal the blue Nokia logo on a white background.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A slowed down version of the 2013 jingle, composed by Henry Daw and Aleksi Eeben.

Availability: Seen on all Nokia phones featuring Android, starting from 2018.
