Background

Millar Gough Ink is a production company by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

1st Logo (October 12, 1999-November 10, 2011)

Logo: In an office setting, at the forefront, we see a bottle filled with orange red ink in it labeled with the company name in an Impact font, also colored in a gold-white gradient. After one of the music variants are heard, a hammer (which, however, if you look at the bottle very closely, you can see a hammer swinging down, as seen in the white light reflection) swings down and breaks the bottle, causing the ink in it to spread everywhere, covering up the whole screen.

Variants:

  • There exists an open-matte version of the logo. This can be seen on the short-lived series The Strip and some 4:3 prints of Smallville. Also seen on Channel 4 and E4 British airings of early season 1 episodes of the said show.
  • There also exists an less-cropped version of the logo. This can also be seen on 2003 DVD releases of the entire 1st season as well as Channel 4 and E4 British airings of later season 1 episodes of Smallville. Also seen on ITV2 UK airings of the entire 1st season of the said show.

FX/SFX: Entirely live-action.

Music/Sounds: Depending on the variant:

  • 1999-2000: After the closing theme of the show plays, there is a splattering sound.
  • 2001-2002: Just the sound of a bottle breaking.
  • February 2002-May 2002: An odd, 3-note piano tune, accompanied by an eerie sound effect.
  • 2002-2011: A reverberating cartoon ditty.

Both music variants end with the bottle breaking sound or the splattering sound. Music and sound design created by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On episodes "X-Ray" and "Hug" of the 1st season of Smallville, the bottle breaking sound is absent.
  • On some early episodes of the 2nd season of Smallville such as "Vortex", the reverberating cartoon ditty is somewhat slightly quieter before the bottle breaking sound appears.
  • Original airings use a generic theme and a voice over.

Availability: Common. First seen on the short series The Strip. Also later seen on Smallville and the 2011 remake of Charlie's Angels on American Broadcasting Company, Crackle by Sony and in Canada on the Canadian Television Throwback. It's also later seen on the 2006 TV pilot of Aquaman, which was initially released on iTunes by Apple Inc. on July 2006 and later included as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray Disc release of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.

2nd Logo (November 15, 2015-)

Logo: On a black background, we see the stacked dark red words "MILLAR GOUGH" in a Helvetica Neue font. To the right of it is a beaker with a black water-drop in it, and inside the water-drop, we see the dark red text "INK".

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None, or the ending theme of the show.

Availability: Seen on the 2015-2018 AMC series Into the Badlands and the 2016-2017 MTV series The Shannara Chronicles.
