Background

Headgum is a podcast network founded and owned by former CollegeHumor employees Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld.

1st Logo (2016)

Visuals: A closeup shot of an old TV's channel knob is seen, with three lightening bolt symbols on the TV's corner. It cuts to the same shot, albeit with the knob rotated. This quickly cuts to a shot of a city skyline, with a TV static overlay over it, with the video also jittering/shaking, before transitioning into a different city skyline. While this section happens, the Headgum icon (a yellow lightening bolt symbol with the teal letters HG in a tall font with a white outline and navy blue extrusion effect over it) horizontally shakes into place (with a subtle chromatic separation effect) before settling. After this happens, the city background turns to normal, before fading into navy blue. the text "HEADGUM VIDEO" appears in White with a teal drop shadow effect, zooming in and out as it fades in. A yellow line draws itself in from the center below the text. The icon briefly glows before going back to normal.

Technique: Computer animation.

Audio: The sound of a button being pressed is heard, followed by a synth wind-up effect. This turns into a short synthesized news-esque tune, with a female announcer saying "This is a Headgum Podcast.", ending with a beep.

Availability: First seen on the Living Room Show episode "This Is Why You're Single", and last seen on the Josh's Mindhouse episode "Lonely and H*rny w/Jake and Amir!" (discussing the webseries of the same name)

2nd Logo (2016)

Visuals:

  • Intro: Over the same navy blue background as before, the HG text from before pops into existence, followed by the two halves of the lightening bolt from before, descending and ascending respectively, before forming the complete symbol. The icon the zooms out and pans up, making space to the text "HEADGUM VIDEO" (like before, albeit with a different slab font) and a yellow line beneath it similar to before, only thicker. they both appear in a similar manner to before. The icon, similarly to before, briefly glows (differently) before going back to normal.
  • Outro: The icon changes sizes on beat with the audio.

Technique: 2D Computer animation.

Audio:

  • Intro Same as before.
  • Outro: Four drum beats.

Audio Variants: On the company's YouTube skits (starting with episode 1 of Geoffrey the Dumb*ss), a voice (likely either that of Jake Hurwitz or Geoffrey James) declares "Video!", in place of the word Podcast.

Availability: First seen on a clip from episode 222 of If I Were You "Financial Domination" (name of clip, not episode), and last seen on the Geoffrey the Dumb*ss episode "The Dance"

3rd Logo (2016-2020)

Visuals:

  • Intro: Many complex transitions appear, starting with a yellow rhombus iris into the navy blue background from before, followed by subtle red lines, followed by a small white circle that zooms in, before complexly disappearing. The Headgum icon from before pops in, and remains for the remainder of the logo.
  • Outro: Same as before

Variants: On the Off Days episode "Baseball", the logo is synced to the final notes of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" before cutting to normal.

Technique: 2D Computer animation.

Audio: Same as before.

Availability: First seen on the Geoffrey the Dumb*ss episode "Arab Spring" and last seen on the Off Days episode "TikTok"

4th Logo (2021/2022)

Visuals:

  • Headgum Originals: Over a dark purple background, a purple line appears, acting as a floor of sorts to the many geometric shapes that appear from under it, landing on the line. a circle similarly appears which is thrown higher than the other shapes, and when it lands, causes the other shapes to bounce up, (the line disappears as this happens) before falling in place, forming the shape of a microphone. The new Headgum wordmark (the pink word HEADGUM in a tall stylized font with the letters being of different sizes) with the word ORIGINAL beneath it, descends from above, settling above the microphone. after the logo remains briefly, many redesigned lightening bolt shapes (colored purple, pink and yellow) appear, causing the logo to disappear, before disappearing.
  • Headgum Video:
    • Intro: Over the dark purple background from before, two consecutive iris transitions and de-transitions reveal many lightening bolt shapes, similarly to before. After the last iris transition, the Headgum wordmark from before zooms and spins in. A pink rectangle draws in from the right of the wordmark, inverting its colors, and pushes the G over next the the H, causeing it to read as "HGEADUM", and forming the redesigned Headgum icon. (the pink letters HG in the same font as the wordmark, with a white redesigned lightening bolt between the two letters) The remaining letters in the rectangle pan up, making way for the word "VIDEO" in a slot-like manner, in the same font. The logo remains as such, until the icon slides into the rectangle, while the rectangle wipes out.
    • Outro: The letters HG from the icon appear one by one at different sizes, followed by the lightening bolt.

Technique: 2D Computer animation.

Audio:

  • Headgum Originals: A triumphant synthesized fanfare is heard with a female announcer saying "This is a Headgum Original."
  • Headgum Video:
    • Intro: Same as before.
    • Outro: A synthesized switch-off effect paired with a camera shutter sound.

Availability:

  • Headgum Originals: First seen on episode 77 of The Headgum Podcast "First Video Episode"
  • Headgum Video: First seen on the Off Days episode "Snacks 5", the first skit from the company folloeing a two year hiatus.
