Background

Network 10 is one of Australia's three commercial television networks. Launched in 1964 on ATV-0 in Melbourne and TEN-10 in Sydney, the network was first known as the Independent Television System then as the 0/10 network, in reference to the channel numbers of its first two stations. By 1988, ATV-0 had moved frequencies to channel 10, aligning itself with the rest of the network, which was rebranded as Network Ten The network was and still is aimed more at a younger demographic than the other commercial networks, embracing the swinging sixties at launch and becoming renowned for it's teen-oriented programming, such as Cheez-TV in the 1990s. In the 2000s, the network reached its peak with reality shows such as Australian Idol, The Biggest Loser and later Masterchef Australia bringing ratings success, though by the late 2010s, this success had faded and the network went into administration, before being bought out by ViacomCBS in 2018. Following the buyout, the company was restyled as "Network 10", replacing the word with a numeral.

1st Logo (1973-1977)

Nickname: "Spirographs" "Ten Star"

Logo: We see two concentric circles zooming towards the screen. One zooms beyond the screen and thee second stops in the middle of the frame. A series of intertwining straiht lines appear around the circle, eventually replacing the outline of the circle completely. The resulting shape morphs and animates like a spirograph before the line-drawing animation repeats itself and the resulting shape is filled by rainbow colours with a circle outlined in white and the word "TEN" in block letters, also in white.

Variants: The logo was originally in black and white, in this version the final logo is solid white/grey and the TEN lettering is in black

FX/SFX: simple 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: A funky stock fanfare, reminiscent of the Pearl & Dean theme, called MacArthur Park by Hugo Montenegro. The full theme can be heard here.

Availability: Extinct.

Editor's Note: None.

2nd Logo (1977-1978)

Nickname: "Ten Star II"

Logo: We see a circle in the middle of the screen from which other circles are emitting in a transmitter-like fashion. Then two lines of the word "TEN" repeating appear from either side of the screen and scroll over each other before they dissipate, leaving one "TEN" in the circle, then many blocks in rainbow colours spiral in towards the circle and form the same star shape from before. The logo zooms in a bit and continues spinning, though this time faster than the previous logo did.

We then see a circle zoom in from the middle of frame as the "star" shape from the prior logos zooms out from beyond the frame. The rainbow colouring from before fades in as the "TEN" streaks in from the corner of the frame. FX/SFX: TBA
