Background

Hoyts Cinemas is a Chinese-owned Australian cinema chain, and is also the largest cinema group in Australia.

1st Trailer (1988-1992)

Logo: Against a starry space background, we see a series of multicolored light beams moves across the screen at either left or right angles. A circular light (likely a star) then explodes into view, and more light beams emerge from the star. A series of trailing Hoyts logos then flies into view, which quickly come together to form a single golden Hoyts logo. The star flashes behind the logo while it shines, The logo then turns on its side, transforming itself into three rings. The rings the fade out as a bucket of popcorn fades in, which turns on its side to reveal a cup of soda to its right. Various candy bars fly across the screen, the last of which fills up the screen and then slides away as an outline of a trash can is drawn. Empty containers fly into the trash can, then it zooms out as a red circle is drawn. The red line moves inside the circle to draw a cigarette, then two more red lines fly in and place themselves across the cigarette to complete the "No Smoking" sign. The sign flashes once and then a series of red rings emerge; the last of which dissolves the sign as an exit sign appears. The exit sign turns to face the screen then shifts to the bottom right to make room for three more signs at the other corners. The text "Please note the location of EXITS." wipes in to fill the center space between the signs. The text is then changes to read "They are at the front and rear of this auditorium." A new star explodes into four light beams which break apart the exit signs which then merge into a single sign with red text reading "Thank you for not talking during the movie." The text flashes, then the sign rotates itself around to reveal the gold Hoyts logo. The logo flashes, then a third star explodes and shoots off more light beams. The white text "Enjoy The Show!" wipes in underneath the logo. Both the logo and text flash once more as the light beams disappear, then the trailer fades out.

FX/SFX: The light beams, various transitions, and the text wiping in.

Music/Sounds: A vaguely space-themed but otherwise generic feature presentation fanfare.

Availability: Extinct. This was also used for Hoyts' U.S. branch, which was sold in 2003 to Regal Cinemas.

3rd Trailer (mid 1990s?-1997)

Logo: Against a blue sky background, we see a reddish-pink Hoyts logo fly across the screen before centering itself. A series of gray tubes begin protruding out of the logo, then rotate upwards until they stretch across the screen from top to bottom while a star shines from the middle of the logo. The logo fades out to a row of candy dispensers which pan downwards until we see a close up of some gummy bears. The gummy bears are then seen raining down until landing inside a bag marked "Candy". We then cut to a close-up shot of a popcorn popper, followed by a Coca-Cola cup being filled. We then cut again to a rotating series of soda cups (Sprite on the left, Coke in the center, and Diet Coke on the right). We then see a CGI trash receptacle with various containers flying into it, the word "Please" flies in next to the receptacle before dispensing itself. The flap closes to briefly reveal the words "Pitch In" before we cut to a series of exit signs detach from one another and fly toward the four corners of the screen. The text "Exits are located at the front and rear of this auditorium." slide into the center while this happens. The signs then fly away as the text zooms out, then a cigarette rotates into place. Four red circles with lines across them fly toward the cigarette and combine to form a "No Smoking" sign. The word "Talking" flies toward the center as the "No" signs flip apart around it to indicate "No Talking". The signs then remerge around the word before flying off the screen as the tubes reappear. The words "Enjoy The Show" form a spinning ring which descends and places itself at the center of the tubes. The completed piece then pans toward the screen at a right angle as the trailer fades out.

FX/SFX: The logo flying, the tubes, the Exit and "No" signs detaching and reattaching, and the spinning "Enjoy The Show" ring.

Music/Sounds: An even more generic cinema fanfare then the 1988 trailer.

Availability: Extinct. Like the 1988 trailer, this was used at both the Australian and U.S. branches.

7th Trailer (2014?-2016)

Nickname: "The Supernova"

Logo: On a space background, a sudden light burst appears and the radiation blasts off into space, we zoom into the supernova, zooming in to reveal the then-new Hoyts logo in orange as the letters zoom into place, the Hoyts logo fades to red, with a supernova like radiation core behind it, keeping the letters together, it slightly turns to the right, before fading out.

FX/SFX: Really impressive CGI.

Music/Sounds: A beacon noise resmbling a ding plays, followed by bass whirring sounds before whooshing as the viewer zooms to the logo, then a strange whirring sound which holds until the logo completes.

Availability: Extinct. Seen after the ads and trailers, immediately after the "Turn off your phones" ad from Telstra or Optus.

Editor's Note: None.

8th Trailer (2016-2018)

Nicknames: "Experience More", "The X"

Logo: We pan around the "H" symbol in "HOYTS", as it slides into place, we fade out, then we pan around as the "OYTS" in "HOYTS" slide into place, as they slide into place two half cross lines light up, then as we slowly zoom out the cross marks close up (like a door) to create an "X" which covers the screen, it shrinks and spins into the words "eXperience more", a white blast zone ripple effect is around the "X", then the "X" spins and zooms through the camera and we see the Hoyts logo being panned around one more time, we fade to black.

FX/SFX: Impressive CGI.

Music/Sounds: A bass riff, similar to the Vue Cinemas theme, a descending bass tone, a laser zap, accompanied by an orchestra theme akin to that of a superhero movie, then as the orchestra tenses and rises (the "X" doing its thing), a blast, sort of like something heavy hitting the ground and the sound of electricity crackling, a bass drop, ("X" zooms at camera) a shifting sort of whoosh, then the Hoyts logo appears again as the orchestra ends its piece.

Availability: Same as before.

Editor's Note: None.

9th Trailer (2018- )

Nicknames: "Experience More II", "The Wine"

FX/SFX: The flowing of the red liquid.

Music/Sounds: A sudden, loud flowing of liquid.
