Background

Calbee, Inc. (カルビー株式会社, Karubī Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese snack food maker. It was founded on April 30, 1949, and its headquarters are located in the Marunouchi Trust Tower Main in Marunouchi, Chiyoda, Tokyo. It launched operations at a new plant in the United States for making its mainstay products "Kappa Ebisen" shrimp chips and "Saya-endo" snow pea crisps on September 18, 2007. Another popular snack they sell is potato fries, called "Jagabee". Its snacks are hugely popular in Asia and are well-known in the United States.

1st Tag (1995-2007)

Visuals:

  • Opening: On a black background with a spotlight, the Calbee logo, which is the red word "Calbee", slides in from the left of the screen and stops in the center, with a shadow before the logo.
  • Closing: Over a white background, the logo starts with the Calbee logo. After a couple of seconds, both "e"s jump.

Variants:

  • At the end of some commercials, the "e"s jump slower.
  • On 16x9 commercials, the closing variant's background is horizontally stretched to fit the aspect ratio. The Calbee logo is also flat and in a darker shade of red, and further away from the screen.

Technique: CGI or (in the case of the 16x9 version) 2D animation.

Audio:

  • Opening: Just a whistling sound.
  • Closing: A female choir singing "Calbeeee..." and 2 drum beats.

Availability: Seen on commercials from the time such as "The Calbee Dog". The opening variant appeared at the beginning of commericals until at least 1998.

2nd Tag (2007-2016)

Visuals: On a white background, "掘りだそう、自然の力。" in brown folds in. It moves up, leaving room for the Calbee logo, which folds in.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A re-recorded version of the theme without the drum beats.

Audio Variant: A two-note guitar theme plays on Calbee commercials from 2007 to 2010.

Availability: Seen on the "Return of the Calbee Dog" commercial, among other Calbee commercials of the era.

3rd Tag (2016-2018)

Visuals: This is simply the logo from before on a white background.

Technique: A still, digital image.

Audio: Same as the previous tag.

Availability: It can be seen on the "Gold Coin-Like Potato Chips Potato Deluxe" commercial.

4th Tag (2018-2022)

Visuals: There is the Calbee logo over a scene of the commercial.

Variant: The position of the logo may vary. For instance, some commercials have the logo at the bottom of the screen.

Technique: Live-action for the scene.

Audio: Same as the previous tags.

Availability: Can be seen on the "Potato Deluxe" commercial from 2020.

5th Tag (November 30, 2022-)

Visuals: Almost the same as the previous tag, but with the Calbee logo from the 2nd tag, complete with the slogan, and in white.

Variant: Again, the position of the logo may vary. For instance, some commercials have the logo in the center of the screen.

Technique: Same as the previous tag.

Audio: Same as the previous tags.

Availability: It made its first known appearance on the "Staring from here ~ Earth" commercial.
