Background

BBC World News (formerly BBC World Service and BBC World) is an international news network operated by BBC Global News Limited (a division of the BBC joint-owned with the UK government). Unlike the BBC's domestic channels (which are funded by the UK television licence fee), it is commercially funded by subscription and advertising revenues, similarly to BBC America. It also isn't broadcast in the UK, though BBC World News reports and programming are also used by the domestic BBC News channel.

BBC World Service

1st ID (1991-1994)

Visuals: On a black background, a blue flash of light is seen vibing, as a red bar slides and expands in front on it. After a while, a dark blue-tan textured CGI model of the Earth appears spinning and moving to the right, while a red streak circles it three times. Then, the bar from the beginning appears and splits, revealing "BBC" and "NEWS" with "WORLD SERVICE" sliding in sandwiched between the two. As this happens, the Earth behind the text stops spinning.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A majestic trumpet theme.

2nd ID (1994-1995)

Visuals: There is Qatar's flag waving on a green silk background with red stars floating in front of it (alluding to Algeria's flag). The scene then fades to a white flag on blue silk, with the stars intact and a yellow cross also floating (alluding to Sweden's flag). It then fades to three white stripes on yellow silk, and as the stars disappear, a red flag on blue silk with the stripes intact and a light blue cross also floating (alluding to Switzerland's flag). These individual parts then move out of the screen to reveal the 1988 BBC logo in white on the silk background.

Technique: Live-action with practical computer effects, directed by Harry Dorrington at Lambie-Nairn.

Audio: An orchestral news theme, with the end part looped for the reminder of the logo. After a while, an announcer is heard saying "From London, 24 hours a day. This is BBC World Service Television."

BBC World

1st ID (1995-1997)

Visuals: Same as the previous logo, except "WORLD" is now seen below the smaller BBC logo.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Same as before, this time without the announcer.

2nd ID (1997-1999)

Visuals: There is a sequence of three waving flags with fading, then a fourth flag cuts in and the BBC World logo (the 1997 BBC logo with "WORLD" in Gill Sans next to it) appears below.

Technique: Live-action.

Audio: A drum-focused news theme, with the ending synth part looped for the reminder of the logo.

3rd ID (1999-2003)

Visuals: On a red gradient background, various lighted shots of a transparent tan-textured CGI Earth are seen with compiterized effects in front of them. The BBC World logo then appears in the center and the Earth stops spinning.

Technique: CGI by Lambie-Nairn.

Audio: An orchestral remix of the BBC News theme at the time.

4th ID (2003-2007)

Visuals: On a black background, a black-red textured CGI model of the Earth is seen surrounded by red "shells" and white dotted circles. The camera quickly pans to a top view of the formation, as the BBC World logo with either the website URL or the channel slogan "Putting News First" appears below.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Another orchestral remix of the BBC News theme at the time, composed by David Lowe.

5th ID (2007-2008)

Visuals: There is a closeup of the CGI Earth model from the BBC News intro surrounded by red "shells", which pans to the right. The BBC World logo fades in with the slogan "Putting News First" appearing from a flash. A white glow then appears around the globe.

Variant: There is a version which is just the BBC News intro at the time, except "NEWS" is changed to "WORLD".

Technique: CGI.

Audio: An abridged version of the BBC News intro. For the second version, just the BBC News theme at the time.

BBC World News

ID (2008-2023)

Visuals: Same as the second version of the previous logo (this time with the 2008 BBC News intro).

Variants:

  • During its 25th anniversary celebration in 2016, the box logo was inverted with the words appearing in red on a white box, the words "25 YEARS" appearing on the right, and "1991-2016" below with confettis in the background. On break bumpers and stings, "1991-2016" didn't appear.
  • Since July 15, 2019, "WORLD NEWS" is in the BBC Reith Sans font instead of Gill Sans.
  • From April 25, 2022, the 2021 BBC logo replaced the 1997 logo to match with the BBC rebrand.

Technique: CGI by Lambie-Nairn.

Audio: The 2008 BBC News theme.
